CoughDrop offers a remote modeling feature to allow AAC communicators and supporters to connect for language learning and communication growth even from a distance. Once enabled, the remote modeling feature allows a connected supervisor to follow along with selections made on a communicator's device and even model words on the screen of the AAC user.
Enable Remote Modeling
The remote modeling option must be enabled from within the communicator's account before a supervisor will be able to connect for a communication session through the communicator's device.
After logging in to the communicator's account, scroll to the "core, phrases, and modeling" section and check the box to enable remote modeling.
You may also want to check the box to give permission for connected supervisors to remotely follow communicator activity in speak mode or to allow supervisors to remotely initiate a modeling connection without communicator approval for each session. Be sure to save your changes at the bottom of your preferences page when you are done.
Initiate a Remote Modeling Session
A CoughDrop supervisor who is connected to a communicator account can request a remote modeling session as needed with an AAC communicator if that communication has enabled the remote modeling function.
To request a remote modeling session, open the "communicators" tab in the blue bar near the top of your CoughDrop supervisor dashboard. Then open the drop-down menu and select "remote modeling."
A supervisor can also request a remote modeling session by opening the drop-down menu near the top right of a communicator's account page.
Select the option to follow the activity for your communicator or the option to follow and also model activity for your communicator. Then hit "request connection."
The communicator will need to be in speak mode on their own device logged in to their account and connected to the internet in order for this connection to take place.
In many cases, you will see a green dot next to the name of a communicator you supervise when that communicator is also online in the CoughDrop app.
If the communicator has given permission for the supervisor to initiate a session without approval every time then the modeling session will connect automatically.
If that permission has not been granted, the communicator will see a red alert near their speak mode drop-down menu when the supervisor requests a session. They will need to open that menu, open the "alerts" tab, and approve the pairing before the remote session will be able to begin.
Functions of Remote Modeling
Once the pairing has been accepted, the communicator and supervisor will see an icon in the left corner of their vocalization box letting them know they are paired in a remote modeling session.
If enabled, words selected by the communicator on their screen will also display in the vocalization box of their connected supervisor. The supervisor's speak mode screen will also move in conjunction with the selections being made on the communicator's device.
A connected supervisor will also be able to model words and phrases from the displayed board on a communicator's screen. Supervisor selections will NOT open a connected speech board for a communicator but will highlight the button on that screen to support modeling words and phrases.
If a communicator selects to move to a secondary speech board, the supervisor will then be able to model words and phrases from that speech board for the communicator.
End a Remote Modeling Session
To end a remote modeling session, either party can exit speak mode which will break the connection for that session.
